2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ABS
The new V-Strom 1000's instrument panel is nicely laid out with an LCD display that has all pertinent info you need, and there's a handy electrical accessory plug just beneath.
Numerous internal changes to the old 996cc V-twin include a 2mm bore increase (from 98mm to 100mm, with stroke remaining unchanged at 66mm) boosting displacement to 1,037cc. Dual-spark-plug cylinder heads and 10-hole injectors improve combustion efficiency at lower rpm, while a more powerful alternator with heavier flywheel helps smooth out that increased power. The heavy dual underseat exhaust cans have been deep-sixed in favor of a single muffler in the traditional lower right position, and a larger radiator removes the need for the old oil cooler arrangement. A Suzuki Clutch Assist System performs as a slipper clutch on downshifts and increases clutch plate pressure while under power for 13-percent lighter clutch pull, while shorter overall gearing via a higher primary drive gear ratio helps acceleration.
Chassis upgrades include an aluminum frame that is 13-percent lighter and 33-percent more rigid torsionally, with a fully adjustable 43mm KYB inverted fork boasting Tokico monoblock calipers utilizing a lighter and more refined ABS system. Wheelbase was extended significantly for more stability, growing from 60.4 inches to 61.2 inches. And much more modern styling incorporates the now-popular beak over the front wheel with stacked headlight arrangement, along with a new nine-way-adjustable windscreen (three angles and three heights, though height adjustment requires tools). The latest-generation V-Strom 1000 comes in 18 pounds lighter than the old version, scaling in at 507 pounds wet.

A host of internal changes help the big V-Strom's V-twin pump out a smooth and steady flow of power. The exposed header piping and oil filter would tend to preclude any serious off-roading.
The most important upgrade on the V-Strom 1000 though is the inclusion of Suzuki's first traction control system. The Suzuki TCS has two modes (Mode 1 offers less sensitivity/more wheelspin) and can also be shut off if desired. Wheelspin is controlled by a combination of ignition timing and secondary throttle valve position. Like most adventure-touring bikes, the V-Strom's seat height (33.4 inches) is not for the inseam-challenged, though there is a 1.3-inch-lower seat option available. And as with most bikes in this genre, there is plenty of room to move about on the Suzuki, aided by the narrow midsection of the firmly padded seat's front portion that also assists shorter legs in getting a good foothold on the ground at a stop. The comfy ergos combined with the 5.3-gallon fuel tank mean effortless near-200-mile stints, making it easy to forget you're aboard a big, tall, and heavy motorcycle on the highway.
Much of that big/tall/heavy perception melts away once you're moving. The V-Strom 1000 is surprisingly agile, with neutral steering and fairly easy turn effort. Ground clearance is adequate, the Bridgestone Battle Wing tires provide decent grip, and the suspension keeps everything under control at anything up to an aggressive pace (try to venture beyond that, and the pegs quickly touch down, followed by the exhaust on the right side).

Four-piston monoblock Tokico calipers biting on 310mm discs provide decent stopping power that's a bit high effort. ABS works good on the street but cannot be turned off for the dirt.
Modified cam timing and different fueling/ignition curves were intended to work with the added displacement to provide a much torquier and even spread of power instead of any top-end rush, and that's just what the new V-Strom's powerplant delivers. The engine will chug down to 2,000 rpm and still pump out smooth and responsive acceleration that continues with nary a bump or dip well into the upper reaches of its powerband, with steam tailing off about 1,000 rpm short of its 9,500-rpm limiter. Mode 1 in the traction control offered a decent amount of wheelspin before it intervened (Mode 2 is more applicable in rainy conditions), and its overall action was very transparent; we're anxious to see this system applied to the GSX-R series soon.
Braking from the monoblock Tokico calipers and dual 310mm discs coupled with the latest-generation ABS is strong and seamless, though lever effort for hard stops was a bit high. Unfortunately, the ABS cannot be turned off except through unauthorized methods, meaning that serious adventurers will be at a disadvantage on the dirt. The V-Strom engine's exposed front cylinder header pipe and oil filter also give us pause for any major off roading. An accessory under-cowl is available and comes standard on the Adventure version, but we're wary of its actual protective capabilities.
