Dubai Police starts training officers to patrol on flying bike!

While many of us are still looking to the future of motorcycles with manufacturers creating a host of new electric models, in Dubai the Police department is already thinking on the next step of evolution: flying bikes!

This week the Dubai Police started training officers to patrol the streets (and dessert!) on the S3 hoverbike, manufactured by Hoversurf. They’re so optimistic about this latest futuristic project that they’ve even published a video of the training session.

The Police department hopes to have their officers patrolling on flying bikes by 2020, and at the moment they’re focusing all their efforts in training the officers to pilot the S3 flying bike. The bike itself has four blades on each corner and is powered by batteries that will allow the Police officer to fly for a maximum of 10 to 25 minutes, somewhat short of the real needs while pursuing the bad guys on conventional vehicles.

In drone mode, the S3 hoverbike gets a bit more flying time, with the manufacturer pointing to 40-minute flight time.

The flying bike you see on the photos and video isn’t the final version the Dubai Police will be using, and for example, the blades will be protected by a sort of rings so no one gets injured while riding this flying bike.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
