Slowly but steadily, electric motorcycles are becoming high priorities for top motorcycle manufacturers, and Honda showed just how interested they are when they brought and revealed at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show the prototype of a motocross motorcycle powered by electricity.
The CR Electric Prototype it’s Honda vision of how the future of off-road bikes will be. There’s not much information released on this electric motorcycle project, but Honda already told the press the bike performance is similar to a 250 cc 4-stroke motocross bike and will use an aluminum twin-spar frame for extra rigidity.
As for the suspension, Showa was the chosen brand to supply both the front forks and the rear monoshock, while the tires have been sourced from Dunlop, and feature a special design for added traction in the dirt, especially important since the electric engine develops full power and torque at the smallest throttle rotation.
Stunned at what Honda revealed in Tokyo, many famous motocross riders have already revealed they are anxious to test ride the CR Electric Prototype as soon as possible. If we take into account that there’s a growing number of countries that are forbidding dirt bikes from being ridden off-road because of emissions and noise, the arrival of the CR Electric Prototype will make many dirt riders happy worldwide.
How long until we see Honda showing the production version of the CR Electric Prototype? We don’t know. Honda usually takes a long time before they move from a concept to a full production bike, and this will be especially important if Honda wants to make an electric dirt bike that performs really well.
