MotoGP – Ezpeleta says Indonesian GP is very important

With a return set for the 2021 season, Indonesia is getting a major role as the World Grand Prix championship tries to expand the MotoGP brand to new countries, trying to get the show closer to fans all across the world. Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna CEO, and responsible for bringing MotoGP back to Indonesia, spoke about how happy he is and how important the Indonesia GP will.

Of course, this won’t be a regular GP like, let’s say, like the Malaysia GP at the Sepang circuit. The Indonesian race will be the first ever MotoGP race to be held in a street circuit, meaning the track isn’t permanent and its layout is designed using public roads along the Mandalika region in Lombok.

Trying to ease the minds of fans, Carmelo Ezpeleta guarantees that the street circuit will be designed with all the safety features of a traditional closed circuit, so special run-off areas will be created to make sure MotoGP riders get a way out of dangerous situations.

Speaking to CrashNet website, Ezpeleta said “This project will be very special for MotoGP history. For us, it’s a big step into the future of MotoGP. It was hard to secure a return to Indonesia, but we finally made it and we got a signed deal. After the success of Thailand and Malaysia, we saw this is a very important region for us, for the fans, because of their interest in bikes. It’s important to do this at a very safe place. The track will be very safe”.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
