Yamaha has officially unveiled the all-new 2021 Yamaha MT-09. Prior to the launch yesterday, we updated you guys with a list of speculated specifications based on the recent leaks and reports. Well, today we have the official specification and pricing details of the 2021 Yamaha MT-09
With the new 2021 Yamaha MT-09, Yamaha has redesigned the entire bike from the ground up. As Yamaha calls it, the new minimalist “Coverless” design gets rid of all the unnecessary bodywork to give the bike a new agile and dynamic look all around.
Starting off with the front, Yamaha has swapped out the twin headlamp unit in favour of a Y shaped single Halogen headlamp unit with twin DRLs on both side.
The fuel tank, on the other hand, has been fully redesigned with larger air intakes. Furthermore, the new compact front fender highlights the new muscular crystal grey graphite colour frame of the Hyper Naked.
Moving on, the new slimline seat together with the updated pointed tail and new tail lamp design further enhances the overall look of the machine. The new MT-09 also comes with 10-spoke spin forged front and rear wheels which are 700g lighter than the current MT-09 wheels.
In the case of the engine, as speculated earlier, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 features Euro 5 compliant 889cc cross plane inline-3 engine. Yamaha says for 2021, the new engine has been fully redesigned to squeeze more power and lower down the weight. Virtually every major component in the new 889 cc mill is new. Yamaha has added in updated new pistons, connecting rods, camshafts and crankcases as well as a new exhaust setup. Thanks to this, although the displacement has been bumped up, the new engine weighs 1.7kg lighter with the exhaust compared to the current design.
Speaking of the displacement, Yamaha enlarged the bore size by 3mm to get that extra 43cc boost. As a result, the new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 pushes 119 ps / 117 hp @ 10,000 rpm (4hp more than MT-09 V2) and 93 Nm of peak torque @ 7,000 rpm. The new torquey powerful engine with the new Up and Down quick shift, the new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 is a great bike for both Urban strollings and spirited twisty canyon riding.
Aside from this, the new 889cc engine features a completely new fuel delivery system. Unlike the current MT-09, where the fuel injectors are attached directly to the cylinder head; in the new engine, the injectors are mounted to the throttle valve side and fuel is injected onto the back of the intake valve heads. This improves fuel atomization and reduces adhesion of fuel within the intake port wall which in turn improves the fuel efficiency. Yamaha says the new MT-09 is 9% more fuel-efficient.
Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) has also been upgraded and a new accelerator position sensor Grip has been added to the 2021 Yamaha MT-09. Aside from this, a lightweight ride-by-wire system replaces the pulley set-up to ensure both feel and reliability.
We are not quite done with the engine updates yet. Well, the new Yamaha MT-09 makes use of a new redesigned high-efficiency air intake as well as a new lightweight exhaust system. Also, the transmission has been optimized and updated to match the increased engine performance. Yamaha has slightly raised the ratios of the 1st and 2nd gears alongside a newly designed shift fork. To handle the increased torque, the new MT-09 is equipped with an updated A&S clutch as well. Aside from this, the cam angle has been changed to give a lighter pull at the lever and ensure gentler downshifting.
To match the torquey powerful engine, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 rolls in with an all-new lightweight CF (Controlled filled) die-cast aluminium Deltabox frame. Yamaha says the newly designed aluminium frame, subframe and swingarm are 2.3 kg lighter and 50% more rigid compared to the previous structure. To go hand in hand with the new compact frame and shorter front forks, the head pipe position has been lowered by 30mm to ensure cornering grip and rider feedback.
The new lightweight aluminium swingarm ensures stability around corners and straight-line too. The swingarm pivot on the new MT-09 is mounted between the frame to reduce unsprung weight and to complement the new rigid balanced chassis.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 comes with lightweight fully adjustable 41mm KYB USD front forks and adjustable KYB rear shock to suit the all-new chassis and engine.
In the case of brakes, the 2021 MT-09 gets YZF-R1 type front braking system with a Nissin radial master cylinder. Furthermore, Dual-channel ABS with 298mm dual disc up front and 245mm disc at the rear handle braking duties.
The new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 gets high-tech 6-axis IMU similar to that on the YZF-R1. The 6-axis IMU sends data in real-time to the ECU to control rider electronic aids such as; Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), Lift Control (LIF) and Brake Control System (BC). So speaking of the TCS modes, the MT-09 gets three switchable modes to suit the need of every rider. Mode 1 and 2 are pre-set modes, and the 3rd; Mode M lets the rider manually set the settings.
One of the things we noticed is the instrument cluster, the new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 makes use of a full-colour TFT instrument cluster mounted directly in the centre. This new modern TFT instrument cluster shows details such as rpm, clock, gearshift, water and air temperate and more. The new display is also linked to the 6-axis IMU, meaning the rider can access IMU settings and options using the handlebar-mounted switch.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 comes in 3 colour options: Storm Fluo, Icon Blue and Tech Black. The new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 is already available in certain parts of Europe and the United States. As for the pricing, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 costs $9,399 / MYR 39,062 in the US. In the case of Malaysia, we are sure HLYM would soon introduce the 2021 Yamaha MT-09.
