Yamaha has confirmed that it has parted ways with MotoGP rider Maverick Viñales. The Spaniard will no longer race for the MotoGP team as his suspension is now permanent. The decision will have immediate effect. Viñales will not be racing under the Yamaha name for the remainder of the season.
After a tumultuous journey with Yamaha, the relationship between the two has soured over the course of the season. Initially, Viñales was to leave halfway through their two-year deal, signing out by the end of the year. However, with the recent events, the exit is sooner than anticipated.
Viñales’ suspension for the Austrian Grand Prix came after he deliberately attempting to blow up the engine of his Yamaha M1 during the Styrian Grand Prix. The dangerous handling of the machine secured an uncontested red flag. Recently, Aprilia Racing announced that the Spaniard will be joining the team starting next year. This confirms the end of Viñales’ time at Yamaha.
“In Assen Yamaha and Vinales already announced the mutual decision to cut short their original 2021-2022 programme and to finish it at the end of 2021.”
“A commitment was made by both rider and team to continue to the end of the current season, with the team guaranteeing its full support and the rider giving his maximum efforts so that we could finish the project ’in style‘.
“Regretfully at the Styrian GP, the race did not go well or end well. Consequently, after deep consideration by both parties, the mutual decision was reached that it would be better for both parties if we end the partnership earlier.
“The early separation will release the rider to be free to follow his chosen future direction. It will also permit the team to focus its efforts on the remaining races of the 2021 season with a replacement rider – yet to be determined.”
Cal Crutchlow will be filling in the 26-year-old’s spot at Silverstone in the British Grand Prix.
