SIC REVS UP TO WELCOME FANS BACK TO THE PETRONAS GRAND PRIX OF MALAYSIA, WHICH WILL BE HELD FROM 21 TO 23 OCTOBER.

After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 Petronas Malaysia GP Championship will return in action at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) for three days from 21-23 October.

The 23rd edition of the Malaysian GP will see Petronas appear as the main sponsor for the first time, replacing Shell who had sponsored the Malaysian GP championship for the past decade. The comeback this time is expected to be more interesting with the appearance of our Moto3 rider Syarifuddin Azman or Damok, who will be competing on a wildcard ticket at SIC.

The announcement and launch ceremony of the 2022 Petronas Malaysian GP Championship was officiated by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SIC, Azhan Shafriman Hanif opened the event with a welcome speech. “This year marks the first year of PETRONAS as the Title Sponsor for the Grand Prix. SIC is all set to #WelcomeHome all the local and international motorsports fans to Sepang after two years hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we will ensure the quality of Malaysia Grand Prix is at the highest level.”

“With no Malaysian riders competing full season in the Championship, I believe Damok will be the pull factor for Malaysians to cheer fellow Malaysian on the grid,” added Shafriman.

Petronas Strategic Communications Group Senior General Manager, Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz also took on the stage to share her views.

“PETRONAS is excited to see the return of MotoGP to Malaysia and it gives us great pride to headline the event, as the championship is synonymous with passion, innovation, pace and performance – values that resonate well with PETRONAS. As such, to celebrate the occasion, PETRONAS has lined up a series of thrilling family-friendly experiences on and off the track, including around KLCC which will be announced in due course.”

“The Grand Prix title sponsorship offers an opportunity for PETRONAS brand to grow and help re-energise Malaysia’s sports tourism and provides a unique platform for us to showcase PETRONAS Primax – the Official Fuel for the Moto2 and Moto3 championships – to the world,” she added.

Damok will compete with the VisionTrack Racing Team, which is making its fifth appearance through a wildcard ticket. The 21-year-old raced on a wild card in Aragon last year as well as in the Portuguese, Spanish and Catalunya GP rounds.

There are several Malaysian GP 2022 pre-championship events lined up for local fans that will start on Wednesday (race week) such as:

  • Public Cooking Competition that showcases the talent of MotoGP riders in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.
  • Public Pit Lane Walk and Rider Autograph Session on October 21, 2022
  • Mega MotoGP Carnival special merchandise sale involving over 100 popular brands.
  • Night Track Tour experience on 21 to 22 October 2022.
  • The first GP offers a lifestyle experience and festival involving a combination of local food, culture, outdoor events, music, art and activities under one roof.

MalaysianGP2022 Mega Lucky Draw offers two amazing prizes namely the Yamaha NVX and Y15ZR Special Edition motorcycles with SIC livery worth RM22,000.

In conjunction with Independence Day, SIC is holding a special ticket sales promotion starting today until August 31 through the website www.sepangcircuit.com.
