New Indian brand expects its electric bike to hit a range of 500 km

Electric powered vehicles are getting better and better all the time, and almost on a daily basis we hear about some new type of battery that is able to offer longer ranges. But unlike what happens with cars, which have a lot of free space to install bigger batteries for longer range, motorcycles have a space problem.

Smaller batteries need to be used on two-wheeled vehicles, and so that means that electric motorcycles offer smaller ranges. Usually something from 100 to 200 km at best.

But a new Indian motorcycle brand called Mankame hopes to do better with their new electric motorcycle project.

Dubbed the Mankame EP-1, this electric motorcycle uses a high-density, liquid cooled 18.4kWh battery pack, which according to its creators will make it possible for the EP-1 to reach and beat the modest range that we find on current electric motorcycles available on the market.

The bike is rear wheel driven, and the power of the 40KW motor goes to the back wheel through a Kevlar reinforced belt drive. According to Mankame, the torque available at the wheel will be of 432 Nm, a number that will make it possible for this bike to accelerate way faster than gas powered bikes.

The EP-1 is a sport bike and will be available in three versions, which differ from each other by the different types of batteries that allow for different ranges with a maximum of 500 km, and different top speeds that can be from as low as 120 km/h to the top spec version capable of reaching 251 km/h.

At the moment the Mankame EP-1 only exists on paper. The Indian company will start a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo on July 1st, and only from that moment on you can place an order to get your hands on one of these electric sport bikes.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
