SMC Salt Shaker
In case you are new, iMotorbike’s weekly iM Cubaholic series covers everything about the iconic Honda Cubs. The Cub is one of the most important bikes in both the motorcycle and Honda’s history. Honda changed the way people look at riding motorcycles with the introduction of the Super cub and the ad campaign “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” back in the 1950s. Since then, Honda has sold over 100 million Cubs with a large Cub lineup/variants where some models are barely known. This week we have another custom build for you guys. Well, as usual, this build is something unique and we haven’t quite seen anything similar to this before.
Meet SMC aka Super Motor Company’s Salt Shaker from Holland. What do you usually think of when you hear “Bonneville Salt Flats”? Triumph? Norton? Hm, well, then you are in for a surprise.
SMC’s main man, Dimitri Hettinga modifies Cubs and sells them for a living. Most of SMC’s builds are road bikes, however, the Salt Shaker prefers salt flats of Bonneville. – That being said, don’t assume they gave this build the name “Salt Shaker” referring to the table salt sprinkler. With its 150cc Yinxiang Motor, tough bespoke frame, racing wheels and tires, the Salt Shaker is actually ready to shake the salt planes of Boneville anytime.
Let’s talk a bit about the build. SMC started the build by stripping out a stock Cub and reinforcing the chassis. To do this, they have added in a reinforcing tube running from the headstock to the under-seat fuel tank. Apparently, SMC spent three days on polishing, grinding and finessing before the chassis was painted salt blue.
Looking at the complete build, the Custom Salt Shaker Cub barley retains any factory plastic bits. All the minor components we see on the build are built from scratch. To begin with, the headlight and taillights are custom made and retrofitted by SMC itself. Fun fact, apparently, the leather seat was made by an 88-year-old local Grandma!
To add onto the list, the JAP-style exhaust is also from Holland, created by metalworking specialist – Shipping tools. Besides this, the Salt Shaker features custom handlebar and a full semi-custom Racing Boy suspension set up all around. As for the choice of rims and tires, SMC went with a pair of 17 inch spoked steel rims with Dunlop TT901 80/90-17 tire at the front and rear.
In the case of the engine, the Salt Shaker is powered by a beefed-up 150cc Yinxiang engine. Mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox, the Salt Shaker pushes (Max) 22 hp and 13 Nm of torque. Weighing only 64 kg, the 22 hp Salt Shaker is ready to hoon across the salt planes of Bonneville anytime!
