Indian shows up at Cologne with the brand new FTR 1200’s

American motorcycle manufacturer Indian has kicked off the action of the INTERMOT Cologne motorcycle show today, revealing the brand-new flat track inspired FTR 1200 and also the better equipped FTR 1200 S.

This model isn’t exactly a surprise, and we at iMotorbike already showed you the official project and schematics of the FTR 1200 a few weeks ago. But today, finally, Indian has showed the new FTR to the world, and honestly, it’s a good looking bike!

Based around an all-new platform, the FTR 1200 features a new twin-cylinder engine with 1203 cc, capable of pumping out approximately 120 hp, while the torque curve has been tuned by Indian to be as linear as possible to make this bike easy and fun to ride on the street, while at the same time giving more flexibility to the engine so it doesn’t demand the rider to always be on full throttle to get the best of it.

The engine features a 12.5:1 compression ratio, high flow cylinder heads, and dual throttle bodies for optimal throttle response and power delivery. Additionally, the engine makes wide use of magnesium to lower weight and utilises a low-inertia crankshaft that allows the engine to rev to its redline quickly for thrilling acceleration.

The frame is a trellis structure, tubular tubes, with both the FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S getting upside down forks, Brembo brakes and a fuel tank that’s hidden below the seat for better weight distribution and lower center of gravity.

Based on the race version FTR750, which has given Indian multiple wins in flat track races, the new FTR 1200 features a similar rear suspension and swingarm design as the FTR750 to not only provide a race bike look, but also ensure maximum grip with a compliant ride. Newly-developed Dunlop street tyres with flat track-inspired tread, a chain final drive, and ProTaper flat tracker aluminum handlebars complete the race bike look and the sporty riding position.

But these aren’t just bikes built to race, and Indian made sure to use premium components like the full LED lights, fast-charge USB port and for those longer rides on the road a very useful cruise control system.

For those riders that always want to get the most of their bike in every situation, Indian has got you covered! The new FTR 1200’s come standard with three riding modes, which affect the way the throttle responds as well altering the intervention of the traction control system.

And for those riders that are looking for that little extra premium and performance, Indian created the S version of the FTR 1200. The FTR 1200 S gets everything that the base model has, but adds:

– Fully adjustable front and rear piggy-back suspension with preload, compression, and rebound adjustments so riders can perfectly match the bike to their personal riding style
– 4.3-inch customisable Ride Command LCD touch screen with Bluetooth compatibility
– Lean-angle sensitive stability control, ABS traction control, and wheelie mitigation control for improved confidence and control.

The FTR 1200 is available in Thunder Black with a choice of power variants, a full power (90kW) model or a reduced power (70kW) model. The FTR 1200 S is available in Indian Motorcycle Red over Steel Gray, Titanium Metallic over Thunder Black Pearl, and a Race-Replica paint scheme, matching the iconic FTR750 race bike. Both models will begin shipping to dealers in the first half of 2019, but availability in Malaysia is still subject to confirmation and we will update you on that as soon as possible, as well as the price of these new bikes.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
