Well, what started as an April Fool’s joke has turned into something real and the latest rumours point to the possibility of Honda reviving one of the most iconic models in their motocross history: the CR500!

This story started back in April with someone that calls himself “Spy Guy” spreading the rumour that Honda was going to revive the CR500. But no such plans were confirmed by the Japanese manufacturer, and so the story almost disappeared into oblivion… until now!

According to our sources that we’ve contacted after seeing many discussions on motocross forums about the CR500, the rumour might well be true, and Honda is thinking about bringing back this two-stroke beast to the motocross tracks around the world.

Recently Honda filed new patent applications to register the CR, CRM and CRE names, and that has led us to the conclusion that the new CR500 is well on the way to become a reality.

According to some Honda clients who are releasing online what was supposed to be a private statement from Honda, the Japanese brand is working on this project and the supposed specs of this new generation CR500 are something close to spectacular: the two-stroke engine will be delivering 92 hp on a bike that will be much lighter than the original CR500, if we take into account that Honda reduced the weight of the frame a massive 14 kg!

The CR name is synonymous with Honda’s legendary 2-stroke motocross range, with the CRM and CRE names a little less recognizable and most likely mean something to only the most ardent Honda enthusiast. They relate to the 2-stroke enduro’s and trailies from the 70s and 80s.

Will we see the return of the mighty Honda CR500?

We haven’t got 100% confirmation about this, but things are looking good for those riders that want to have a taste of the two-stroke Honda power.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!

  • More b.s. Honda was my company off choice for nearly 20 years. Honda’s weak management in all areas ( dirt, street motorcycles, four wheelers,ATVS, even their dam cars) has created an atmosphere that they are well constructed average machines. We want two strokes you we fools. How come KTM has beaten you to the punch so many times? Now, no one is listening to us, including KTM. We want a big bore 500 two stroke. Screw the racing classes. We don’t want enduro power like the new weak KTM two stroke 250! Build it, we will buy it. Before I’m dead. I don’t believe Honda has the balls. The MOTOR company, my ass.
