The long-overdue 2020 Olympics has finally commenced last week in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the pandemic last year, the quadrennial event could not take place as travelling restrictions were imposed to ensure social distancing and curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus. With the vaccination progress slowly gaining pace, certain rules are relaxed, leading to major sports events resuming such as the recent Euro Cup 2020 and now the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

The Malaysian contingent saw badminton ace Lee Zii Jia leading the squad and while Zii Jia has long been a Malaysian asset and rising star, international attention seems to have shifted to our swimming prodigy Welson Sim instead. The 24-year-old is no stranger to the big stage as he was the first Malaysian male swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Games where he competed in the men’s 400-metre freestyle event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

While Welson is known for his impeccable swimming skills, he is also a lover of motorcycles. When he is not flexing his shoulders in the pool swimming laps, he is flexing his motorcycles on social media. While Welson had an unfortunate encounter with a motorcycle, injuring his wrist and requiring surgery, he remained hopeful and bounced back greater in his performance.

We wish Welson all the best in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics! Malaysia Boleh!
