SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif is optimistic, emphasizing Moto2 or Moto3 teams as a stepping stone for local talents in MotoGP.

“I’m open to the idea of having Moto2 or Moto3 teams. We must discuss future plans and identify teams willing to partner with SIC and Petronas. If an opportunity arises, we’ll talk to Petronas,” Shafriman explained.

He emphasized Petronas’ crucial role in developing local riders, underscoring the need for private sector support alongside government funding.

“We need private sector help to back the government financially, form great teams, get the best equipment, and support talented riders. It’s not impossible to have Moto2 and Moto3 teams, but talks with Petronas are crucial. Yet, we shouldn’t rely solely on Petronas, as they have other goals. I hope other companies interested in motorsports development step up to support,” he added.

SIC, now Sepang International Circuit Petronas, recently rebranded after a three-year naming agreement with the national oil and gas company.

As talks progress, the chance of Malaysia in Moto2 and Moto3 grows, with SIC and Petronas playing key roles in steering the nation toward success in global motorcycle racing. Collaborative efforts with potential sponsors herald a new era for Malaysian riders aiming for global recognition.
