Despite their weekday role as caregivers for their young grandchildren in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, the weekends offer them a well-deserved escape to pursue their passions.

Their journey into the world of motorcycling began during the pandemic when international travel was restricted. Their son, Emmanuel, an avid superbike enthusiast, introduced them to the thrill of group bike rides to places like Fraser’s Hill in Pahang and Kuala Kubu Baru in Selangor. Captivated by the experience, Chong obtained his full B license for superbikes and invested in a second-hand Suzuki V-Strom 650. Convincing Karthiainy to join their adventures, they embarked on exhilarating rides together.

Initially hesitant due to safety concerns, Karthiainy’s perception shifted after her first trip to Fraser’s Hill. Falling in love with the sensation of wind in her face and the joy of riding, she embraced the experience wholeheartedly. Their motorcycle group, spanning Penang, Pahang, and Melaka, has covered thousands of kilometers, indulging in fortnightly rides across the country.

Engaging in such activities is vital for seniors to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle. As individuals age, staying physically and mentally active becomes increasingly important. These recreational pursuits offer numerous benefits, fostering social connections, physical fitness, and exploration of new places.

For Chong, the mental stimulation of navigating different terrains keeps his mind sharp and focused. Every ride demands split-second decisions, requiring mastery of throttle control, braking, and cornering to ensure safety. Meanwhile, Karthiainy notes how their motorcycle adventures have strengthened their relationship, providing them with precious time together and earning them admiration from their children for being ‘cool parents.’

However, Chong underscores that riding a superbike entails a responsibility for safety. Proper maintenance, protective gear, adequate rest, and adherence to safety protocols are paramount. Looking ahead, Chong plans to acquire a smaller motorcycle suitable for Karthiainy’s petite build, prioritizing her comfort and safety on future rides.

Reflecting on their journey, Chong chuckles about his occasional mishaps, emphasizing the importance of learning from experience. Despite the occasional tumble, their passion for motorcycling remains unwavering, fueling their desire for new adventures and shared experiences on the open road.
