SBK – Tom Sykes injured and in doubt for Portuguese round

It’s normal that while championships stop for their usual mid-season break, riders try to maintain fitness by training in many different ways. Bicycle riding, motorcycle riding, running, going to the gym, everything works as long as they keep their body at full strength.

But sometimes accidents happen, and that’s exactly what happened to Tom Sykes.

The British rider for Kawasaki factory team in World Superbike, is sidelined after picking up an injury while training in early August. At the time, Sykes thought it wasn’t such a big injury, but now doctors have completely ruled out that he gets back on his Kawasaki anytime soon.

According to reports, Sykes has a rupture of the anterior ligament of the fibula and also a bone lesion in the insertion of the ligament. He immediately started a recovery program over the Summer break, but that isn’t enough for him to be back on track.

At the very least Tom Sykes will miss the next test in Portimão (tomorrow and Friday), and is in serious doubt that he will be able to race at the coming Portuguese round in the September.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
