Triumph motorcycles racing department has finally revised their 765 cc three-cylinder engine they will deliver to all Moto2 teams from next season onwards, and the final version which will be used has been uncovered today at a special even in Hinckley.
With the presence of Moto2 riders Sam Lowes, Danny Kent, John McPhee, Isaac Viñales, Joe Roberts, Luca Marini and Bo Bendsnyder, Triumph’s engine is a thing of beauty and even in early tests riders have been nothing less than impressed by its power and overall performance.
This 765 cc unit is based on the same engine we can find on the acclaimed Street Triple naked road bike, but has been heavily tuned to deliver more midrange torque and peak power. It is said that this triple, in its racing form, is capable of developing 140 hp.
Magneti Marelli has developed a new ECU to fit the new engine, and from now racers will be able to use a quickshift for both up and downshifts, with the system incorporating an autoblipper function. Not only that, but this new ECU has enabled the use of a traction control, a first on a Moto2 prototype.
And for those of you who aren’t aware, Triumph won’t be able to race in Moto2 with their own team. Regulations say that Triumph is the exclusive engine supplier for Moto2 teams, and participating teams will need to source a prototype chassis from other manufacturer, with Kalex and KTM being the best ones at the moment.
And the best news?
Triumph has admitted that, if demands are high enough, they will build a supersport for the road with this engine!
