Do you remember when we told you that BMW Motorrad was careless and let us know, in advance, that the new F850 RS would be arriving soon? It was beginning of March, and at the time the German brand supplied a flyer speaking of their big touring bikes like the R1250 RT and the K1600.

But on that marketing flyer, BMW Motorrad also spoke about their new mid-range tourer, the F850 RS.

Although many BMW Motorrad fans were hoping that this would be the new mid-sized variant of the S1000 XR sport-tourer, new patent files now made public in Brazil show that the spy shots we published before are really from the new RS version.

As expected, the patent files first seen here, reveal that the RS version is a model based on the current F850 GS mid-sized trail.

The twin-cylinder parallel engine is a direct transplant from the F850 GS. That means it will be able to deliver at least 95 hp, but since the F850 RS is a bike meant to be ridden on asphalt roads, we believe BMW Motorrad could adjust the behavior of the engine with a new injection mapping linked to revised riding modes.

Of course, the chassis should also present some minor changes to its geometry for better handling, but the upside-down forks and Brembo brakes will be retained.

The overall design is basically the same already seen on the spy shots, and so the F850 RS will be very similar to the 9Cento concept bike. Aggressive, with flowing lines, the RS should prove a great addition to the BMW Motorrad lineup when it arrives by 2020.

The official launch should be at EICMA Milan motorcycle show.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
