Triumph builds around 65,000 Motorcycles a year. However, only 6,000 to 7,000 units are built in Hinckley. These include the high-end TFC models and the mass-produced Speed Triple and Tiger 1200. Out of the 65,000 units, majority of triumph’s bikes roll out from their three Thai factories.
However, Triumph has been moving its mass production to their Thailand factory just outside of Bangkok for some time now.
According to sources, the mass production of Speed triple and Tiger 1200 would move to the Thai plant soon. However, the production of TFC models would remain in Hinckley. Also, the Hinckley plant would produce around 4,500 units including prototypes and other special projects.
“We are now preparing for Triumph’s next wave of strategic growth. We want to maximize the growth opportunity for the brand globally, particularly in the Asian markets. This is why we are increasing our design resources here in the UK, and focusing our mass production capabilities in Thailand,” CEO Bloor said in a statement.
“There will still be manufacturing capability in the UK, but the role of our facility in Hinckley will be reconfigured to enable us to create a more flexible and high-value capability.”
As a result of this, between 40 and 50 manufacturing jobs at Hinckley could be lost. However, after the change, the Hinckley factory would be the “Centre of Excellence for Research and Development” and Triumph would be hiring new design engineers for this R&D centre. On the other hand, Triumph would call the Thai factories the “Centre of Excellence for Manufacturing”.
