Miguel Oliveira Biography

Miguel Oliveira had a kickstart to his career around 2005 and 2006 when he won the Portuguese MiniGP Championship. He then moved on to join the FIM CEV Repsol in 2009 and secured third place. A year later, he battled Maverick Viñales to the final race of the season for the title and eventually finishing runner-up by just two points prior to his World Championship debut in 2011. The Portuguese raced full-time in 2012 with the Estrella Galicia 0,0 team and clinched two podium wins.

He joined Mahindra Racing in 2013 and stole the limelight when he secured the Indian manufacturer’s first-ever podium in Malaysia. In 2014, he took another podium at Assen while still being under Mahindra. In 2015, he was recruited by Red Bull KTM Ajo and despite the rough start, he managed to score victories in Mugello and Assen before a wrist injury in Germany. He bounced back and bagged another four wins and two seconds in the final six races, eventually being runner-up. In 2016, he joined the Moto2 World Championship with Leopard Racing and made his return to the Ajo team onboard the new KTM chassis.

He claimed their first win and delivered and overall stellar performance. He continued his impressive performance in 2018 and was runner-up. He then made his MotoGP debut with Red Bull KTM Tech 3 after that and had a great start. He has a crash in Phillip Island and had to sit out the final three races and preseason testing at the end of 2019. In 2020, he became the second KTM rider to claim victory in the premier class in the Styrian GP. He then ended the series with a stunning triumph at his hometown in Portugal to close the veil. This year in 2021, he will be battling for the title with partner Brad Binder.
