Labeled as the first hooligan bike, the Triumph Speed Triple has been one of the best sport naked motorcycles around, since it was introduced by the Hinckley based brand in 1994. During the years, the Speed Triple has suffered many updates, but somehow Triumph has always been able to keep the Speed Triple as a true hooligan bike.

But in Italy, there’s a very small company that believes that the Speed Triple has a hidden potential, and they want to show that to the world… and they’re doing it in big style!

Italian Dream Motorcycle (IDM), owned by Sergio Giordano, have made a name for themselves by creating truly impressive limited edition custom bikes, one of which we’ve already covered on a special article. The Tripla 0.0 is a Street Triple 675 taken to another level, but this time the team decided to put their hands and work their magic on a 2009 Triumph Speed Triple 1050.

And the result of their hard work is the Tripla Competizione, a hooligan bike gone mad!

The design is what strikes you the most when looking at the Tripla Competizione. All that’s left from the standard Speed Triple is the fuel tank, and everything else was custom made by Sergio and IDM to fit their goal of creating a bike to be ridden aggressively on track, while also using race grade components from Accossato and Motogadget.

While IDM makes two different versions of the front fairing, for street or track use, the version you see on these photos is the track only version, where the round headlights, typical of Triumph motorcycles, are covered by an aluminium piece, handmade, for an authentic race style. The street version ditches the aluminium and uses carbon fiber.

The three-cylinder engine, of which we talk about next, is wrapped with a belly pan also in aluminium, hand beaten by the hands of IDM specialized team members, and the iconic frame is left exposed, while the rear subframe was reworked to fit a single seat unit, much in the design style of classic cafe racers, with the rider seated on a leather seat.

As we promised, the stock Speed Triple 1050 engine has received a lot of love and care by Italian Dream Motorcycle. Of course the 130 hp this engine makes right out of the factory isn’t a bad performance figure, but Sergio Giordano wanted the Tripla Competizione to ride as fast as possible, so engine internals have been reworked by IDM, using racing components specifically built for this IDM limited edition Tripla Competizione.

That hard worked payed off big time, with the engine now offering an increased performance with 145 hp. And the exhaust note is music to our ears, with those 145 hp breathing through a custom made exhaust system.

Of course, that also meant that the Tripla Competizione had to get better chassis components, and IDM spared no expenses on this department. Suspensions were sourced from – you guessed… – Öhlins, and are fully adjustable, so that the rider finds the perfect setup on the track, while stopping power is race bike level, with Brembo delivering a set of monoblock calipers.

The standard three arms cast wheels Triumph designed for the Speed Triple have also been set aside, with Italian Dream Motorcycle opting for Rays gold spoked wheels, covered in sticky Pirelly Diablo Corsa tyres.

Obviously the design, specs, features and the matte black and gold colours are impressive, but the Tripla Competizione also stands out on the price tag: 45.000 euros, or RM211.700. That’s what you need to spend to be able to have one in your garage.

But hurry up! Italian Dream Motorcycle will only build five units of the Tripla Competizione for the whole world.

With more than ten years as a motorcycle journalist, i enjoy everything that has to do with two-wheels. I'm a fan of sport bikes and i prefer riding them on a racetrack, but give me a road filled with corners and good asphalt and i'll be there to have some fun!
