Yamaha has already filed the R9 trademark in several countries including Europe and Asia. The name R9 refers to a ‘full-fairing’ machine powered by the same three-cylinder CP3 engine found in the MT-09.

The arrival of the R9 is no surprise especially since Yamaha introduced the YZF-R7 earlier. It features the same CP2 parallel-twin engine found on the MT-07.

However, the main catalyst was the cessation of production of the ‘road-legal’ model YZF-R6 due to strict emission regulations.

In the latest development, the Japanese magazine Autoby claims that the R9 will be launched in 2024. The first announcement is likely to be at the EICMA 2023, at the end of November.

Interestingly, Autoby also shared some ‘render’ images that show what the upcoming R9 will look like.

As expected, the Yamaha R9 will share the same equipment from the MT-09 including the chassis and swingarm.

The image also shows how the R9 will also be equipped with the same suspension and braking system as the MT-09. However, we expect the R9 to get the same suspension package as the MT-09 SP.

For the record, the CP3 engine on the MT-09 produces 117hp at 10,000rpm and 93Nm at 7,000rpm at the same time. It is a suitable option as a ‘sportsbike’ machine.

Although there is no official confirmation so far from Yamaha, we can expect more details of the bike throughout the year.
