Earlier last week Yamaha revealed the 2021 Yamaha MT-09. Following this, Yamaha Europe unveiled MT-09’s younger sibling, the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 yesterday.
The MT-07 arrived almost 7 years ago in 2014. The 690cc twin-cylinder naked street bike instantly became a hit because of its outstanding cross-plane technology and the compact chassis. The torquey 690cc cross plane twin-cylinder engine together with the chassis’s ideal blend of stability, agility and ergonomics made it popular among riders of all ages and experience levels.
For 2021, Yamaha introduces the MT-07 with numerous different updates all around the bike. From the updated design to the powertrain and braking system, the new 690cc Master of Torque is here to push the boundaries.
Starting with the design, the new 2021 Yamaha MT-07 follows MT’s next-generation bodywork. Just like the MT-09, the updated next-generation design gives the MT-07 distinctive refined look with a quality feel.
From the front, Yamaha has updated the headlamp design with a minimalist headlight assembly. The new front Y-shape design of the headlight features a single halogen unit with twin DRLS on both sides similar to the one on the update 2021 MT-09.
Aside from this, the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 features an all-new 14-litre fuel tank cover design with sculpted air ducts and compact LED turn signals all around.
Moving to the rear, Yamaha has updated the tail section of the bike. The rear end of the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 features an updated tailight unit as well as a wing-like attachments just below the slim seat area.
The 2021 MT-09 now comes with a high-spec LCD colour instrument cluster similar to the one from the Tracer 700. Aside from this, Yamaha has also added a new handlebar switch to navigate through the meter more easily.
Aside from this, details like the finishing of the fork covers, footpegs, engine covers and frame further enhance the aggressive look of the updated middleweight naked street bike. Yamaha says the overall compact design has been optimised to go hand in hand with the MT-07’s CP 2 engine in order to project a real sense of power and torque.
On the ergonomics side, the Yamaha MT-07 2021 is fitted with a new 32mm wider aluminium tapered handlebar to give the rider a more assertive riding position as well as a more refined feel at low speeds.
In the case of the engine, 2021 Yamaha MT-07 features the latest 690cc 2-cylinder cross-plane 2 Euro 5 compliant engine. To enhance the engine response and performance, Yamaha has updated numerous components around the engine. These include a revised air intake, new 2 into 1 exhaust set up, new ECU module and an optimized fuel injector setting.
Mated to a 6-speed gearbox, the new 2021 MT-07 pushes 67 Nm of peak torque @ 6,500 rpm and a maximum power of 72.3 hp @ 9,000 rpm.
Speaking of the cross-plane concept, the 270-degree crank gives the MT-07 an uneven firing sequence so MT-07 produces a more characterful gusty exhaust note.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 gets upgraded brakes too. As earlier, the MT-07 comes standard with dual-channel ABS . However, the new 2021 MT-07 features larger 298mm dual disc up front with four-piston semi-monobloc callipers and 245mm rear disc with a single-piston calliper. Yamaha says with the new Michelin Road 5 tires – 80/55-17 tire at the rear and 120/70-17 at the front, the stopping power is especially apparent in wet conditions.
In the case of suspension, the 2020 Yamaha MT-07 retains the same suspension components. Non-adjustable 41mm KYB telescopic front fork and KYB mono shock-assisted connection on the rear with adjustable rebound damping and spring preload.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 will be available in three colours: Tech Black, Icon Blue and Storm Fluo.
The official pricing hasn’t been announced yet. Yamaha Europe says the pricing details can be obtained directly from Yamaha dealers [Europe] as the new MT-07 will only be available in dealers starting Janurary 2021. In the case of Malaysia, we expect that the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 will be released in the first quarter of next year, 2021.
