Toyota, known for innovation and excellence in autos, made motorcycle and car enthusiasts curious. In August 2023, they applied for a trademark for “Land Hopper,” sparking imagination. Many initially thought it was a new Land Cruiser model, maybe more affordable.

On October 21, 2023, the truth came out—it wasn’t another Land Cruiser but a “three-wheeled electric personal mobility concept.” In simpler terms, the Land Hopper is a small electric trike, closer to a moped than a big motorcycle. Toyota hasn’t shared many technical details yet, keeping us all eager for the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

The Toyota Land Hopper: What We Know

The Land Hopper isn’t just a three-wheeler; it’s a foldable one. Toyota sees it as a perfect solution for short trips. You can easily stash it in your car or even your Land Cruiser, using it when you reach your destination.

The good news is, you don’t need a motorcycle license for it in Japan, or probably in many other countries. Japan allows people over 16 to ride certain vehicles without a motorcycle license, as long as they meet specific requirements like low speed.

This rule applies in Europe and most of Asia, which is crucial if Toyota plans to sell the Land Hopper internationally.

Yamaha’s Role in the Land Hopper

Some may wonder if Yamaha, known for its leaning multi-wheeled vehicles, influenced the Land Hopper. While Toyota and Yamaha have partnered before, there’s no clear evidence linking Yamaha to this new venture.

The Land Hopper leans on three wheels, with the leaning action upfront, where two wheels sit. It looks quite different from Yamaha’s leaning vehicles, like the Tritown, which is still a concept in 2023.

Concepts can change, so Yamaha’s involvement isn’t ruled out, but as of now, there’s no sign of it. The car world eagerly awaits more details leading up to the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, where we’ll see the Land Hopper in action and discover how it makes short trips a breeze.
